A Century of X-Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine: With Emphasis on Photographic Records of the Early Years, by Richard F. Mould

This book was written and published on the centennial anniversary of the discovery of x-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. Dr Mould's book makes a unique contribution to the telling of this entertaining story - in the unusual and accessible style of a 'radiological photograph album'. Over 700 historical illustrations, with full and informative captions, are supported by short introductory essays to blow the dust off our fascinating radiological past in an easily readable style. The focus of this bookis on the historically more interesting earlier years - of discovery and invention, diagnosis and therapy, dosimetry, risk and protection. The photographic record is complemented by archival accounts of the pioneer scientists and physicians, and of their early patients, and is interspersed with a variety of radiological anecdotes. In the several chapters on diagnostic techniques, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine the history is nevertheless brought up to date so that the old methodologies may be contrasted with newer technologies. The medical theme is itself complemented by two interesting chapterson museum and industrial applications of radiography.

Naked to the Bone: Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Century, by Bettyann Holtzmann Kevles

From the days when a single x-ray required a two-hour exposure to the fraction of a second necessary today, medical imaging technology has grown by leaps and bounds. Kevles manages to make the history of x-rays and medical imaging an engrossing read in Naked to the Bone. Starting with Roentgen's fruitful investigation of the glow emitted by a cathode-ray tube, Kevles follows the development of medical imaging into CT, MR, PET, ultrasound, and mammography. Perhaps what makes this book most interesting to the average reader, however, is its emphasis on social history, as Kevles shows the affects of the X-ray on art, fashion, and self-image. Kevles provides an excellent history of the technology of medical imaging--x-rays, --but builds on it to examine the wider ramifications of bodily transparency.
