WOMEN'S HEALTH NEWS AND INFORMATION
1. CANCER PAIN TREATMENT GUIDELINES NOW AVAILABLE FOR PATIENTS
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the American Cancer Society (ACS)
have published new cancer patient treatment guidelines for patients to help them
understand how cancer pain can be effectively treated. More than 50% of cancer patients
must cope with pain on a daily basis and of these patients, more than 30% suffer moderate
to severe pain. Patients often do not realize that most cancer pain can be controlled with
medicines or other therapies.

2. SCIENTISTS INVESTIGATE LINK BETWEEN ESTROGEN DEFICIENCY AND HIV
For years, researchers have been investigating connections between estrogen loss and
osteoporosis, heart disease, and other problems. Now, there appears to be a link between
estrogen deficiency and HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. Although
the preliminary results have only come from animal studies, the scientists believe that
topical formulas of estrogen may help protect women from HIV infection without the side
effects or risks associated with oral estrogen replacement therapy.

3. FLORIDA MAY SOON OFFER BREAST CANCER LICENSE PLATE TO HELP FUND RESEARCH
Breast cancer activists Staci Ehrenkrantz and Debi Strochak are working with the Florida
Breast Cancer Coalition (FBCC) to get the State of Florida to issue a special breast
cancer license plate. The license plate would help create breast cancer awareness and fund
research. However, before the plate can become a reality, the women must collect 15,000
surveys from Florida residents who are willing to purchase the tag and raise $60,000 for
the state application fee.

4. TREATING BREAST CANCER WITH LUMPECTOMY
Lumpectomy (also called breast conserving surgery) is the surgical removal of a cancerous
tumor in the breast, along with a small margin of the surrounding normal breast tissue.
The procedure is often performed on women with small or localized breast cancers and can
be an attractive surgical treatment option for breast cancer because it allows women to
maintain most of their breast after surgery. This newly updated article discusses all
aspects of lumpectomy including how lumpectomy is performed, who is a candidate for
lumpectomy, radiation after lumpectomy, lymph node removal, and more.

5. ALL ABOUT MENOPAUSE
Menopause, the time in a woman's life when she stops menstruating, is genetically
predetermined and typically occurs between the ages of 48 and 52. However, some women will
go through menopause at an earlier or later age, depending on a number of factors,
including disease treatment. This article gives detailed information on menopause
including common symptoms, diagnosing menopause, coping with short term effects of
menopause, pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy, and long term risks such as
osteoporosis and heart disease.

BREAST CANCER DISCUSSION BOARD
"I was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. I had CMF followed for 6
months followed by 5 years of tamoxifen. Six months off of tamoxifen the cancer has
recurred in the bone just below the breast. It has been suggested that I have chemo or
hormone blockers or both and I would love to hear from someone who has been through this
and hear what they decided and their results."
