EXPERT PANEL MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT BREAST CANCER TREATMENTS FOR ALL WOMEN A panel of national and international experts said that in addition to surgery, most breast cancer patients should receive chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, or radiation therapy to improve their chances of surviving breast cancer. The panel convened at the three-day National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Development Conference on Adjuvant Therapy for Breast Cancer, which was held from November 1 to November 3, 2000 at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Among the panel’s top recommendations were chemotherapy for most women with localized breast cancer and hormonal therapy (most often with the drug tamoxifen) for women whose breast tumors are found to have estrogen receptors. CONTROVERSY CONTINUES OVER WHEN WOMEN SHOULD START ANNUAL MAMMOGRAMS Most physicians agree that screening mammograms help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, often several years before a lump can be felt. However, the debate over when women should begin receiving annual screening mammograms has been ongoing. Most physicians and cancer organizations believe that all women 50 years of age and older should have annual mammograms to help detect breast cancer. Yet, many organizations, including the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American College of Surgeons, and the American Medical Association (AMA), recommend that women should begin receiving annual mammograms at age 40. NEW STUDY FINDS NO LINK BETWEEN HIGH-FAT DIETS AND BREAST CANCER Contrary to previous data which suggests that a fatty diet may increase the risk of breast cancer by raising hormone levels, a new study of nearly 400 women finds no link between a high-fat diet and breast cancer. Researchers say that the results give women one less thing to worry about when it comes to breast cancer. 'FRIENDS YOU CAN COUNT ON' RAISES $325,000 FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH 'Friends You Can Count On' is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate, promote awareness, raise funds, evaluate promising new projects and make seed grants for research that investigates new and improved methods of earlier detection of breast cancer. For example, a two-year, $40,000 seed grant from Friends helped launch the groundbreaking research of Dr. Mark Miller of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The goal of Dr. Miller's research is to halt the development of breast cancer through chemical intervention, by identifying those patients at a higher risk of breast cancer due to their genetic background. Dr. Miller was recently awarded $1.4 million from the National Cancer Institute to continue the research he began with a seed grant from Friends. At the fifth annual 'Gathering of Friends' held in September, the group raised $325,000 to help support research into earlier methods of breast cancer detection.
