BREAST HEALTH NEWS
1. U.S. HOUSE APPROVES BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER TREATMENT BILL, SENDS TO PRESIDENT
CLINTON
On October 12, 2000, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that would provide
funding for the treatment of breast and cervical cancer among low-income women diagnosed
with either disease through a federally-funded Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) program. The bill, which was originally passed by the House in May 2000, was delayed
due to concerns over its requirement to add warning labels to condoms about the spread of
the human papillomavirus (HPV). Earlier this month, a new version of the bill was approved
by the Senate and has now been sent to President Clinton, who had said earlier that he
would sign the legislation.

2. STUDY FINDS HIGHER BREAST CANCER RISK FOR WOMEN WHO TOOK OLDER VERSIONS OF ORAL
CONTRACEPTIVES
A new study finds that women with a family history of breast cancer who took oral
contraceptives prior to or during 1975 are at a higher risk for breast cancer than women
with similar family histories of breast cancer who did not take the older versions of
birth control pills. The link between breast cancer and oral contraceptives was strongest
among women with five or more cases of breast or ovarian cancer in their families.
According to researcher Thomas Sellers, PhD, there is no currently evidence that oral
contraceptives on the market after 1975 increase breast cancer risk.

2. COPING WITH THE SIDE EFFECTS OF TAMOXIFEN
The drug tamoxifen is approved by the U.S. FDA to help treat early and advanced stages of
breast cancer and to prevent the return of breast cancer. While taking tamoxifen may
benefit many breast cancer patients and women at high risk of the disease, tamoxifen has
also been shown to cause bothersome side effects in some women. In some instances, serious
complications including deep vein thrombosis, endometrial cancer, and stroke may develop
from tamoxifen use. This article discusses the possible side effects and complications
that can occur from tamoxifen use. The article includes statistics on possible side
effects and complications and methods to cope with these side effects.
